EN A distinctive feature of European warfare in the early modern period was that commanders not only led troops into battle, but also organised and financed their own units. War was a form of investment that required substantial resources for equipment, transport, soldiers’ wages. At the same time, military entrepreneurs placed great importance on their personal appearance and the items they surrounded themselves with in camp. This, too, was a calculated investment in prestige. This article presents a case study of Albrycht Władysław Radziwiłł, the second son of one of the wealthiest Lithuanian magnates in the first half of the seventeenth century. Drawing on his father’s ledgers and correspondence, it reconstructs the costs of Radziwiłł’s participation in the Livonian campaign of 1609 and analyses their structure. It also examines the role of conspicuous consumption in shaping the image of a young aristocrat at the beginning of his public career.
