EN This article focuses on war burials practices, which we define as the systems of care for war graves and cemeteries, as well as the specific immediate and long-term issues arising from the material consequences of bloody war losses. As retlated to the area we are studying, i.e. Central Poland, we propose distinguishing five stages of war burial. The particular attention is paid to the documents related to Russian burials practices, which have been studied less than German and Austrian burials. We present arguments in favour of the thesis that war burials practices are a complex and timeless problem, which is particularly burdensome in areas where the resting places of fallen soldiers are abnormally numerous. Therefore, we suggest viewing war burials as ‘hereditas damnosa’ and as a manifestation of continuity and multi-temporal complexity.
